Attic Spray Foam Insulation in Central Minnesota

The attic is where most Minnesota homes lose the largest share of their heat, and it is also the assembly where spray foam produces the most dramatic before-and-after. We seal and insulate attic floors and roof decks across Todd, Douglas, Morrison, Stearns and Crow Wing counties.

Why attics leak so badly in our climate

On a cold night the stack effect turns your house into a chimney. Warm air rises and pushes out through every top-plate gap, can light, bath fan, plumbing chase and attic hatch, and an equal volume of frigid air is pulled in low through the basement and rim joist. Blown cellulose or fiberglass sitting on that leaky plane slows heat conduction but does nothing to stop the air moving through it.

That escaping warm air is also what melts the snow on your roof and refreezes it at the eave, which is the mechanism behind ice dams. Air sealing the attic is the only permanent fix; adding more loose fill on top of a leaking ceiling plane just buries the problem.

Attic floor foam vs. sealed roof deck

If the attic is a simple vented space with nothing in it, we typically air seal the ceiling plane with a flash of closed-cell foam at all penetrations and top plates, then bring the flat area up to depth. It is the most cost-effective approach and keeps the attic vented as designed.

If ductwork, an air handler, a finished bonus room or a complicated roof geometry lives up there, the better answer is spraying the underside of the roof deck to bring the attic inside the conditioned envelope. The ducts stop losing heat to a subzero space, knee walls stop being cold walls, and the whole upstairs evens out.

What attic foam actually changes

Homeowners consistently report three things after an attic job: the upstairs finally matches the downstairs, the furnace runs in shorter cycles, and the house is quieter. In older homes with settled insulation the heating fuel drop over a full winter is often the most noticeable line item.

Because foam does not settle, compress or lose R-value, the improvement is permanent. There is no re-insulating in fifteen years.

Frequently asked questions

Can spray foam be added over existing attic insulation?
Foam needs to bond to a clean substrate, so existing loose fill is removed from the areas we are sealing. In many attics we air seal and foam the plane, then blow new insulation over the top to reach target depth.
Will sealing the attic cause moisture problems?
No, when the assembly is designed correctly. We select open-cell or closed-cell foam and thickness based on the roof assembly and venting strategy so the dew point stays inside the foam, not on the sheathing.
Does attic foam stop ice dams?
It addresses the cause. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts roof snow, so stopping that air and heat loss is what eliminates them.
