The problem with studs and batts on a foundation wall
The traditional method — framing a 2x4 wall against the concrete and stuffing it with fiberglass — puts warm, humid interior air in direct contact with a cold masonry surface. That is a condensation detail, and it is why so many finished Minnesota basements smell musty behind the drywall.
Closed-cell foam sprayed directly on the wall eliminates the gap entirely. The foam is the insulation, the air barrier and the vapor retarder, and the concrete stays warm enough that condensation never forms.
Finishing over foam
If you are planning to finish the basement, we spray the walls and rim first, then you frame in front of the foam without any additional vapor barrier. Building inspectors in our area are familiar with the assembly, and it is the fastest path to a dry, comfortable lower level.
If you are not finishing, the foam still transforms the space — the floor above warms up, the basement holds temperature, and the walls stop weeping in humid weather. Thermal barrier requirements are covered in your proposal.
