Why more blown-in insulation often doesn't help
The standard advice is to top off the attic with more blown fiberglass or cellulose. That raises the nominal R-value on paper, but it does nothing about the air leakage underneath — and loose-fill insulation is fully air permeable, so warm air moves straight through it.
This is why homeowners who added a foot of blown insulation still have cold bedrooms and still get ice dams. The problem was never the R-value. It was the several square feet of accumulated holes in the ceiling plane.
Two approaches: attic floor or roof deck
If your attic is a simple vented space with no mechanicals in it, we typically air seal and insulate the attic floor. Foam seals the ceiling plane completely, and the attic stays vented and cold — which is exactly how a traditional Minnesota roof is designed to work.
If ductwork, an air handler, or a finished bonus room lives in the attic, the better move is to spray the underside of the roof deck and bring the whole attic inside the conditioned envelope. Your ducts stop losing heat to a subzero space, and knee wall rooms finally hold temperature.

Ice dams and what actually causes them
Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, and that meltwater refreezes at the cold eave. The root cause is almost always heat and air leaking from the house into the attic — not gutters, not the roof itself.
By sealing the ceiling plane or the roof deck, spray foam removes the heat source. Most homeowners see a dramatic reduction in ice damming the very first winter after the work is done, along with fewer icicles and less risk of water backing up under the shingles.
Comfort on both ends of the year
Attic work is not just a winter upgrade. A vented Minnesota attic can hit 140 degrees in July, and that heat radiates straight down into upstairs bedrooms. Sealing and insulating the plane keeps second floors dramatically cooler and lets the air conditioner cycle off.
Customers who previously ran window units upstairs or slept downstairs in August routinely tell us the upstairs is finally usable after attic foam.
What to expect during installation
Most attic projects finish in one day. We protect the access route, set up containment and ventilation, remove or relocate existing insulation as needed, spray, and clean up thoroughly. You will want to be out of the immediate area during application and for a short ventilation period afterward.
